What the BFSG requires.
The BFSG implements an EU directive. Among other things it covers services in electronic commerce, meaning websites and apps through which consumers conclude contracts: online shops, booking portals, appointment bookings with a contract.
Technically, the obligation follows the standard EN 301 549 and with it the WCAG 2.1 criteria at level AA. On top of that comes information on the website about how the requirements are met. A purely informational site without contracts is often not covered. Whether your offer is affected is a question for your legal adviser if in doubt. We audit the technology, not the legal position.
What we audit.
The audit combines automated tools with manual testing. Automated tests find only part of the problems, much only shows up when you use the site with a keyboard and a screen reader.
- Full keyboard operation with a visible focus
- Contrast of text, buttons and form fields
- Heading structure, page regions and link texts
- Alternative text for images and graphics
- Forms with labels, error messages and help text
- Ordering, booking or appointment requests from start to finish
- Layout when zoomed to 200 and 400 percent
- Videos, PDFs and embedded third-party content
Why an overlay plugin is not enough.
Some tools promise accessibility through an embedded script: an icon in the corner, behind it font sizes, a contrast mode and read-aloud. The problems in the code stay where they are. A form field without a label is still unlabelled for a screen reader.
That is why many accessibility specialists advise against such solutions. We fix the causes where they arise: in the theme, in the templates and in the content.
Have your website audited for accessibility
Go to the formAudit, report, implementation.
You get a fixed price for the audit up front. Only then do you decide whether and what we implement.
- Agree which pages and flows are audited
- Audit with tools, keyboard and screen reader
- Report with issues, severity and estimated effort
- Fix the issues or plan a rebuild, depending on scope
- Re-check and compile the accessibility information
Our own site as the benchmark.
This website follows WCAG 2.2 AA, the newer version of the guidelines. Full keyboard operation, visible focus outlines, calculated contrasts and respect for reduced motion are standard here.
So we audit against a benchmark we meet ourselves.
What the audit is not.
The audit is a technical assessment, not legal advice. The BFSG does not provide for an official seal for accessible websites.
Accessibility is also not a state you reach once and keep. New content, plugins and features can bring new barriers. We show you what to watch for when maintaining the site.
